Medical Systems’ market comprises acute care in surgical clinics and intensive-care units. The product offering comprises surgical tables, surgical lights, ceiling service units for medical technical equipment as well as fully equipped, prefabricated OR theatres, equipment and instruments for cardiac surgery, vascular interventions, cardiac assist and ventilators. The business area holds leading positions within all product areas.
Current activities in the business area
Medical Systems will focus on the following in 2010:
- Realisation of synergies from the Datascope acquisition (2009), and the acquisition of Boston Scientific’s Cardiac and Vascular Surgery divisions (2008)
- Expansion in cardiac surgery, both in the US and in other markets.
- Continued enhancement of internationalisation of the marketing organisation.
- Launch of new products, including the FLOW-i anaesthesia system, the CARDIOHELP cardiac assist product and the Fusion Graft vessel implant.
The acquisition of the Cardiac and Vascular Surgery divisions from US company Boston Scientific was completed in January 2008. The Cardiovascular product area, which markets products and services for cardiac surgery, vascular surgery and cardiac assist, was established in conjunction with this acquisition. Through this acquisition, Getinge strengthened its position in the North American market.
In January 2009, Getinge completed the acquisition of Datascope Corp, a US company active in the cardiovascular area. The company is the global leader in the Cardiac Assist area and holds more than 70% of the global market for intra aortic balloon pumping.
In partnership with Medical Systems’ operations in the area of perfusion products, the two acquired companies have established a formidable player in the cardiovascular market with a broad and attractive product range. The business area has also created a strong platform for continued expansion in this area.
